Vision Standards That Open the Door to Policing
If you’re applying to the RCMP or a municipal police service in British Columbia, a comprehensive eye exam is one of the first medical requirements you’ll need to complete. Each policing branch sets its own standards covering visual acuity, field of vision, depth perception, and colour vision, and applicants need to meet them all to move forward in the recruitment process.
At Eyestyle Eyecare, our optometrists complete these specialized exams at both our South Surrey and Kelowna locations. We’re familiar with the requirements for the RCMP and the major BC police forces, and we can fill out the official forms on your behalf so your application stays on track.

What to Bring to Your Police or RCMP Eye Exam
To complete your exam efficiently, please bring the following with you:
- The official vision examination form for the policing service you’re applying to
- Your current glasses and/or contact lenses
- A piece of photo identification
- Information on any previous refractive surgery (LASIK, PRK, SMILE), including your pre-operative prescription details
Each policing service requires its own form, and a separate exam is needed for each application you submit.
RCMP Vision Standards & Requirements
The RCMP requires applicants to meet specific thresholds across four areas of vision, plus a clean ocular health assessment.
Corrected Visual Acuity
With glasses or contact lenses, applicants must demonstrate visual acuity of at least 6/6 (20/20) in one eye and 6/9 (20/30) in the other.
Uncorrected Visual Acuity
Without glasses or contact lenses, applicants must demonstrate at least 6/18 (20/60) in each eye, or 6/12 (20/40) in one eye and 6/30 (20/100) in the other. This standard exists to ensure officers can function in the event of lost or damaged corrective lenses while on duty.
Field of Vision
Binocular field of vision must measure at least 150 degrees continuous along the horizontal meridian and 70 degrees in the vertical and oblique directions, centred on the fixation point.
Depth Perception
Normal stereo vision is required. Stereo acuity must be 100 seconds of arc or less on the TITMUS Test or an equivalent measure.
Colour Vision
Testing uses standardized Ishihara pseudo-isochromatic plates. At least 17 of 21 patterns must be correctly identified. Applicants who do not pass Ishihara may be reassessed with the Farnsworth D-15 test.
Ocular Health
Applicants must be free from ocular diseases that could impair visual performance during duty.

Refractive Surgery and Waiting Periods
If you’ve had laser eye surgery or implanted lenses, the RCMP requires a waiting period before your vision exam can be completed. Current minimum waiting periods include:
- LASIK: 30 days (longer for higher pre-operative prescriptions)
- PRK: 90 days (longer for higher pre-operative prescriptions)
- SMILE / ReLEX SMILE: Wait time depends on pre-operative prescription (added to the form in November 2025)
- Implanted Corrective Lenses, Anterior Chamber: 6 months
- Implanted Corrective Lenses, Posterior Chamber: 12 months
Your optometrist will also document any post-surgical halos, starbursts, night vision difficulties, or contrast sensitivity issues, and confirm that your vision is stable.
